When looking for breast cancer, a woman can wait days or weeks for the result. More and more, that’s changing. Some radiologists are changing how they practice due to several woman wanting results from their mammograms as soon as possible.
Many woman are waiting to hear their results when getting checked out for breast cancer and become anxious on the results. Not at NYU Langone, where patients will get their results the same day.
According to Dr. Michael Recht, Radiology Chairman, NYU Langone, “It’s more labor intensive to do this, it’s more difficult to do this, but we felt that if patients want that and we want to be a patient centric medical center, we need to make the effort to do
that.”
In order to do this they must hire more radiologists, but NYU say they have not passed that cost on to the patients, but other centers may.
Woman have a choice for same day results or the standard option of waiting a few days. About half the woman at NYU Langone chose option two.
Dr. Jiyon Lee, NYU Langone Medical Center said, “There are patients who are happy to get they’re screening mammogram, and are happy to wait for the results because most mammograms are going to be normal.”
A suspicious area on one breast was found on a patient by Dr. Lee, who then asked her to take another x-ray there the same day. Dr. Lee finally gave the patient some good news, there are no problems, after comparing the previous mammogram results.
